Reflection
Reminiscing over my past year in College Comp One, one common theme almost all of my essays had was society and how it affects different parts of life. All but one of my essays related to this idea.
For my narrative essay, I wrote about my sixth grade year where I went through months of pain and agony. Despite the pain I faced the people of the Ronald McDonald House helped me become a better person. This relates to the theme because the way the people treated me in the house relates to how the people made a positive impact in society not just to me but to others as well who visited them.
For my compare and contrast essay, I wrote about inner and outer beauty. This essay relates to society and how it affects others because in society we focus on whether we should have one or the other to fit into society. In my essay, I addressed how both types of beauties relate to first impressions, jobs, social status, friendships, society, and other factors of life.
My first argumentative essay and I wrote about the welfare system in America which plays a large part of society in America because without it many would not be able to afford to feed their families. Many Americans are on welfare but not all need it therefore in my essay I questioned the necessity of the program. Before writing this essay, I had always had a narrow view on welfare and believed that too many people relied on the program because they were lazy not because they needed it. After researching welfare I realized that although numbers are high in the amount of people who do abuse the system, there is a larger amount of people that properly go about using the system and truly do need the help and the system should be fixed but not abolished.
I wrote about how I feel gay marriage should be legalized in Pennsylvania for my second argumentative essay. This topic relates highly to society because in a poll taken in 2012, 25% of Americans are gay, lesbian, or bisexual. This topic closely touches me because I have two sets of gay uncles who I am very close to and have seen their struggles in Pennsylvania because they are not permitted to marry and the impacts it has had on their relationship along with their life styles.
The final paper that related to my theme is my paper about the symbolism in the movie The Lorax. I feel that the theme relates to my essay because the symbols in the book closely relate to the real world and have important messages about the environment and communication. While writing my essay, I learned the importance of conservation and how big businesses can damage the environment therefore as a society we should put conservation and stability in natural resources and the environment first.
All in all, this past year in College Comp One I have learned a lot about the society I live in and the impacts it has on people. I have also learned that it is everyone’s responsibility to be a positive impact in society. I feel that overall, my character has been strengthened and I have learned that it is important to stand up for my beliefs.
