For my first argumentative essay I wrote about Welfare and I debated whether the government should be able to aid citizens through the process or not. In my original essay, I had an issue with not having an embellished and creative introduction so for my final version I rewrote my introduction. Because of all the added information, I had to cut a lot of extra details and shorten a lot of my sentences for my final version. The last main change I made to the essay was adding a clincher sentence to my essay because my original version lacked one.
Welfare: To Be or Not To Be Abolished?
Imagine you lost your job because of cutbacks and for months on end you search for another. You have a family depending on your income yet you cannot find a way to make money. Luckily you hear about Welfare and are applicable to receive it. Welfare is the generalized name for any program in which the government provides aid to struggling citizens. The money funding these programs is from increased taxes upon the working and upper class citizens. To receive welfare, a person must meet certain requirements such as: meeting the minimum age of 21, be able to prove every penny they claim to have or not have, provide substantiation of where they are currently living, and how the bills are paid or not paid. Some people feel that welfare is unneeded by those who receive it. Others argue only those who need the assistance receive it and is an important economic boost. Although supporters of welfare believe that it is not abused, I believe that welfare is unneeded by many and has been turned into a bedraggled privilege yet should be reformed, not abolished.
For those who believe in welfare, it is viewed solely as a safety net. Under this conception, the money the recipients receive is used for only beneficial uses. It can be used as a bridge of stability for those in between jobs, a payment for someone taking night classes to better their job status, and even money for food. For those who are disabled or truly just trying to get back on their feet, welfare is a necessity that is only used for a short while.
Without welfare, our nation would be falling apart even worse than it is currently. Welfare boosts the economy and is much needed in its reformation. Giving welfare to citizens gives them more money to spend in which stimulates our economy. If we took away the money being spent by the recipients of welfare, then less money is being put back into our economical system sending those less fortunate further into recession.
On the other hand, while welfare started out as a valiant idea in our country, it has unfortunately been abused. It is easy to trade certain welfare aids for drugs and money on the street. Another way it can be abused is welfare health aid programs allow medication hoppers to go from one emergency room to another to obtain medications. Also, welfare gives more money to those who have a larger amount of children. Therefore, many families who are on government assistance are likely to have more children to increase their income.
Welfare fraud is also a problem. Sometimes, those who truly do not need aid by the government manage to surreptitiously slip under the radar and take away from those who need the assistance. Welfare can also fail to address underlying problems recipients may have. Perhaps the reason someone cannot receive a job is because they lack basic math skills. Instead of aiding this citizen by helping he or she receive the mathematic help needed, the state government simply hands them a form of money instead of fixing the crux of the issue that is needed to be independent.
Welfare also discourages marriage. When a couple marries, their income is combined therefore disqualifying a couple from welfare. This is an issue because it does not promote the idea of two-parent homes, which is proven to be beneficial in raising children. People who use welfare often have a reduced motivation to work and earn a self-sufficient living which can lead to their children doing the same thing.
At the end of the day, while welfare started out as a noble idea, I believe that welfare should be reformed. Welfare can be used for good yet can make recipients completely reliant on others to take care of them economically. Welfare takes away hard earned money from other hard working Americans. How would you feel if a recipient, instead of taking your tax money, directly took money from your wallet in line at the grocery store? In my opinion, welfare is this and the corrupt system needs a reformation. Reforming welfare will decrease taxes for hard working Americans and truly help aid those who need government assistance more. We cannot take away the assistance entirely because those who truly need the assistance deserve it therefore by reforming it everyone will be happy with the system
